City Crits: Spitalfields, Brick Lane and Shoreditch led by Martyn Evans

Developer Martyn Evans explores key debates surrounding the rapid transformation of the City’s eastern fringe – from the 1990s when he cut his teeth in the area to the present day

London City Crits is a new series of walking tours exploring the past, present and future of the many areas undergoing massive transformation within the capital. Our second event explores Spitalfields, Brick Lane and Shoreditch and will be led by Martyn Evans – former Cathedral and U+I director and current development director at Dartington Hall.

The tour will explore the radical transformation of these areas from a transient semi-derelict fringe zone to one of London’s most creative hotspots and coveted addresses, visiting the busy streets, landmarks and neighbourhoods which shaped Evans’ early career.

From this unique viewpoint Evans will talk us through the wave of regeneration which has swept over the City’s eastern edge over the past decades – evaluating where things went right and wrong, and how our approach to inner city renewal could be improved for the future.

Key projects along the route will include Foster + Partners Old Spitalfields Market redevelopment, the restored Christ Church Spitalfields by Nicholas Hawksmoor, the Old Truman Brewery, RichMix by Penyore and Prasad, PLP’s Bishopsgate Goodsyard, the Nobu Hotel by Ben Adams Architects and AHMM’s White Collar Factory.
